Colmenar

This lively village is located on the edge of Montes de Málaga Natural Park, a wooded area with Mediterranean vegetation, particularly popular among recreational hikers, mountain bikers, and birdwatchers who can delight in the numerous nesting spots for birds of prey. This whitewashed village is also the gateway to Axarquía. It is delightful to spend time here in one of the many restaurants or bars. On Sundays, the villagers often come to the village with horses and mules. Colmenar is the result of a merger of several 'cortijos,' one of which was called 'Colmenar' because there were many beehives ('colmenas'). In the village, you can visit the honey museum, where you will be guided through the wonderful world of bees. Thanks to the variety and quality of local products, the village is also known as the 'pantry of the province of Málaga.' Throughout the year, various festivities are scheduled, such as the 'Mosto' and 'Chacina' festivals, where thousands of tourists are welcomed with 'verdiales' (traditional singing and dancing) and treated to fermented grape juice that flows generously, along with various cured meats.

Comares

Whether you choose winding roads or traverse hilly terrain amidst abundant vineyards, all paths lead to this picturesque village situated 700 meters above sea level. Comares is a former Moorish settlement, also known as the balcony of Axarquía, thanks to its privileged high position. The narrow cobbled streets take you back in time. Be sure to follow the footsteps throughout the village as they guide you along a route, passing several ceramic tile signs that succinctly explain the history of the village. Definitely visit the cemetery, which offers a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding rolling landscape. Some well-known dishes include 'maimones' (garlic soup), 'migas' (bread crumbs with pork and vegetables), and 'plato de los montes' (fried egg, potatoes, green peppers, pork, and chorizo).

Riogordo

Riogordo is lesser known to the general public, but no less beloved. Here you will find the typical Spanish way of life. This village is nestled amidst the olive groves and is home to a large cooperative that processes the harvested olives into liquid gold, olive oil. The name was derived from the river 'Riogordo', which means thick river, thanks to the abundant presence of minerals. During the Andalusian-Arabic period, this former Arab village experienced great economic prosperity due to agriculture. During Holy Week, the passion of Jesus Christ is reenacted by almost the entire village. This performance has gained national fame. It is also delightful to relax on one of the many terraces where you can taste local specialties such as snails, which even have an entire day dedicated to them with various tastings, live music, and regional dances.
